Which Timer Function Do You Need?

The timing function is the first thing to check before selecting a timer relay. Two devices with the same voltage and similar appearance may behave completely differently in the control circuit.

Common timer relay functions include:

On-delay timer – the output changes state after the preset time once the relay is energized. These are widely used for delayed starting and sequencing.

Off-delay timer – keeps the output active for a preset period after the control signal is removed. Typical uses include ventilation, cooling and delayed shutdown circuits.

Replacing a timer relay is not simply a matter of finding another unit with the same supply voltage.

An older timer may be configured for on-delay, off-delay, interval, pulse, cyclic or star-delta operation. The output contacts and timing range also have to suit the existing control circuit.

For replacement work, the most useful information is:
