Description

ARP IMPEX supplies and exports ABB SPAA 342 C feeder protection relays for replacement, maintenance stock and existing medium-voltage switchgear installations.

SPAA 342 C belongs to ABB’s older SPACOM feeder protection range. It was used on radial distribution feeders in isolated-neutral, resistance-earthed and resonant-earthed networks. The relay covers overcurrent, short-circuit, sensitive earth-fault and phase discontinuity protection. Depending on the version, directional earth-fault protection and automatic reclosing are also included.

A useful difference between SPAA 342 C and SPAA 341 C is the earth-fault input arrangement. ABB designed SPAA 342 C for applications where more sensitive non-directional earth-fault protection was required. Its 0.2 A tapping made it particularly useful where the standard earth-fault arrangement of SPAA 341 C did not provide enough sensitivity.

SPAA 342 C is no longer an active ABB product, so current requirements normally come from utilities and industrial plants that already have these relays installed. Is REX615 a Direct Replacement for SPAA 342 C?

ABB’s current SPACOM-to-REX615 retrofit program covers selected SPACOM relays. SPAA 342 C is not presently included in the published supported-model list. SPAA 341 C is included, but this should not be extended to SPAA 342 C without ABB confirmation.

For that reason, we would not advertise REX615 as an official direct retrofit for SPAA 342 C.
