The RV5/440 is a varistor surge suppressor designed to minimize overvoltage peaks and effectively limit or eliminate high pre-damping voltage frequencies. It is compatible with both AC and DC operated conventional contactors, supporting rated control circuit voltages between 250-440 V AC (50/60Hz) or 250-440 V DC. During inductive circuit operation, particularly when opening the contactor coil, significant overvoltages can occur. The electromagnetic energy stored in the coil during contactor closing is released as surges upon opening, which can reach several kilovolts and cause interference with electronic devices, insulation breakdown, or even damage to sensitive components. A varistor, by design, is a resistor that significantly decreases in resistance when a specific voltage threshold is reached, helping to absorb and mitigate these surges. The RV5/440 is easily clipped onto the top or side of the contactor or contactor relay base without altering the device’s dimensions. It offers high energy absorption for effective damping and features an unpolarized system for flexible installation. However, its clipping function only activates once the varistor reaches its operating voltage, allowing voltage fronts up to this threshold.
