The RV5/133 is a varistor surge suppressor designed to minimize peak overvoltage and limit or eliminate high pre-damping voltage frequencies. It is suitable for use with AC-operated conventional contactors rated for control circuit voltages between 50–133 V AC (50/60Hz) and DC-operated conventional contactors with control circuit voltages between 50–133 V DC. During inductive circuit operation, overvoltages occur, particularly when the contactor coil opens. The electromagnetic energy stored in the coil during contactor closing is released upon opening in the form of surges, which can reach several kilovolts. These surges can interfere with electronic devices, cause insulation breakdown, or even damage sensitive components. A varistor, a resistor whose resistance significantly decreases when a certain voltage threshold is reached, absorbs excess energy and mitigates voltage spikes. The RV5/133 offers several advantages, including easy installation by clipping onto the top or side of the contactor or relay base without altering its overall dimensions, high energy absorption for effective damping, and an unpolarized design suitable for both AC and DC circuits. However, it begins voltage clipping only at its operating voltage, meaning the voltage front remains unaffected up to that point.
