The RT5/150 is a Transil diode surge suppressor designed to minimize overvoltage peak values and limit or eliminate high pre-damping voltage frequencies when used with a DC-operated conventional contactor for a rated control circuit voltage of 77 to 150 V DC. Inductive circuit operation generates overvoltages, particularly when the contactor coil opens. The electromagnetic energy stored in the coil during closing is released upon opening in the form of surges, which can reach several kilovolts in amplitude. This can lead to issues such as interference with electronic devices, insulation breakdown, and damage to sensitive components.
